A Heartfelt Thanks From Ato Desta

The main focus of our sponsorship program is education. In fact, the acronym in H.O.P.E. Child Sponsorship stands for Helping Orphans Prosper through Education.

In Ethiopia, over 30% of school aged children do not attend school. The biggest obstacle to school attendance is poverty. Imagine being so poor that you had to choose between food and school supplies. That’s the reality for many families living in poverty. Even though school is free to attend, children are sent home if they arrive without the proper supplies or uniform.

This is why, each year, we hold our School Is Cool fundraiser. These funds are used to send unsponsored children to school. FOVC has dreams of expanding the sponsorship program to even more villages, and each year they select the poorest children in those villages to receive school supplies so they can get an education.

Last year we met with Ato Desta Anja, principal of the school in Humbo, near Wolayta Soddo. Ato Desta is a warm, caring man, and he loves his students. He’s been employed at the school for 40 years! He reiterated to us that the 150 children in Humbo who received help with school supplies would absolutely have NOT been in school this year without our (YOUR!) help.

Meeting with Ato Desta and his staff in Humbo. They were thrilled to receive some soccer balls for the kids!

Ato Desta wanted to make sure that all of our supporters knew how crucial your help was in getting 150 kids to school each day last year. So, from Ato Desta, the staff, and all the children at Humbo School, THANK YOU!

This year you have an opportunity to send these kids back to school this year. It costs $40 to send a child to school for the entire year. Our fundraiser ends in just two days, and we need your help to send 440 kids to school this year!

Because of YOU, 450 kids are in school!

Partners With Ethiopia supports two sponsorship programs. The Dale and Shanto Centers of H.O.P.E. each have 150 children. Between them there are around 75 kids who are still unsponsored. Sponsorship covers the cost of all the school supplies and uniforms the sponsored kids need for school, but because the unsponsored kids are not receiving services, their families must purchase supplies for them. For families living in severe poverty this is a tremendous hardship. Many of these unsponsored children would not be able to attend school.

There is a third village, Boricha, where FOVC hopes to expand its sponsorship program in the future. 150 children have already been profiled in Boricha, but are not currently receiving any assistance. This year Boricha was hit incredibly hard by famine. Not only do families not have enough money to purchase school supplies, they are struggling to provide their children with the most basic necessities. FOVC recognized the need and approached us to help send the 150 Boricha children to school this year.

All this translates to around 225 children who do not have the support of sponsorship to help them get an education. In early August, when we began fundraising, raising enough money to purchase scholastic materials and uniforms for 225 kids seemed like an almost unattainable goal. We did a LOT of praying! So many of you helped by sharing our fundraiser with your friends, and a $1,500 matching donation really got the ball rolling. Within 24 hours, ALL the matching funds had been matched, and just a few days after that our goal was met! It was amazing (and a lot of fun!) to see how quickly the need was met. God is so good, and our donors are amazing – because of you, 450 kids are now in school!

Yesterday we received photos of some of the children with their new school supplies, which were all purchased locally in Ethiopia. They are so happy and proud, and so are we! Thank you so much for all the ways in which you helped: donating, helping to spread the word, and praying. You have made a huge difference in the lives of so many children. Thank you!

Perfect Attendance + A Love Of Books = SUCCESS!

This certificate means a lot to young people in Ethiopia!

This certificate means a lot to young people in Ethiopia!

There are few better ways to start the day than by getting a great progress report about one of our sponsored kids. Eighth grader Ashebir W. recently received a passing score on his eighth grade regional exam. Only kids who pass the eighth grade exam are eligible to enroll in high school. To put this in perspective, in Ethiopia, just 15% of young people attend high school. We are so proud of Ashebir! He said the exam was very difficult and he was so excited to find out he passed. Ashebir thanks God for all the good things that have happened in his life.

FOVC staff interviewed Ashebir’s teachers to find out what contributed to his success. We know that his participation in FOVC’s H.O.P.E. Child Sponsorship Program has provided the materials, nutrition, tutoring, and school fees that helped him succeed, but the real star is Ashebir himself. His teachers say that he has had perfect attendance in school, and spends much of his free time reading. A supportive family and involved community workers from FOVC have provided lots of encouragement to Ashebir along the way.

Ashebir is pictured with Mebratu Thomas, FOVC's Program Manager.

Without the continued support of his sponsor, Ashebir’s story would have unfolded very differently. Sponsorship makes all the difference in the world to these kids!

Studying for Success

Habtamu

Kids in Ethiopia are preparing to take regional exams. Results from the 8th grade exams determine whether a student will be going onto high school and which academic track he will be on when he gets there.

Fourteen-year-old Habtamu has been in FOVC‘s sponsorship program for five years. His parents are deceased, and his grandfather cares for him and his siblings. Habtamu will be taking the grade 8 regional exam in a few weeks. He tells us he’s been using most of his free time to study for the exams, and has been getting extra help for things he doesn’t understand. FOVC’s community workers are following him closely to help him prepare. He is receiving tutoring at the FOVC Dale Center of H.O.P.E. along with sample tests to study and review. Habtamu is working diligently to make sure he does his best on the exam.

We love the way FOVC places so much focus on the children’s education. In fact, the H.O.P.E. Child Sponsorship program stands for Helping Orphans Prosper through Education. We know that education is an important factor in breaking the cycle of poverty. That’s why FOVC works so hard not only to keep kids in school, but to help them thrive in school. A portion of your $38 sponsorship payment is used for scholastic materials such as pens, notebooks, and other school supplies, and also for the academic tutoring your sponsored child receives at the Center of H.O.P.E.

We currently have 79 more children waiting to be sponsored so they can get the kind of academic help Habtamu receives.  Your $38 a month donation is tax deductible, and in addition to the academic help, it provides your sponsored child with a hot meal six days a week, hygiene training, medical care, and caring mentors to guide him or her. Select a waiting child here.

Sponsorship Keeps Kids in School

It is a joy to watch our sponsored children grow and mature. Fifteen-year-old Aster began attending FOVC’s Dale Center of H.O.P.E. in 2011. She credits FOVC’s sponsorship program with helping her to stay in school and get an education. Aster lives with an aunt and uncle, and before she was sponsored she often missed school due to a lack of basic school supplies such as pens and notebooks. Her aunt and uncle simply could not afford to purchase them for her. Aster says that since she was sponsored five years ago she has been able to attend school on a regular basis because FOVC purchases her supplies for her.

Hygiene care is a big issue, especially for teenage girls. FOVC not only supplies the sponsored children with soap and hair oil, but the children come twice a week to bathe at the compound. Aster mentions that she is especially thankful for the feminine hygiene supplies she receives through the program. It’s common for girls in rural areas of Ethiopia to miss school when they have their periods due to a lack of supplies. Aster is glad she has the supplies she needs to attend school. The girls were especially happy with the Days For Girls washable sanitary pad kits our team brought over in March.

Aster also wanted to mention how grateful she is for the medical care she received through FOVC. Last year she became very sick and was unable to walk. Her aunt and uncle were unable to afford medical attention for her, so FOVC stepped in and brought her to the doctor. She’s now completely recovered and glad to be back in school!

Aster works hard in school and plans to become a doctor.

Aside from the school supplies and hygiene supplies that Aster mentions, sponsored children also receive six hot meals per week year round, homework help, and summer tutoring.

Your $38 per month sponsorship payment is life changing for our kids! We have 79 more children waiting to be sponsored. $38 a month is a great investment in a child’s future.
